This issue of Digital Icons explores how, in post-Communist space, transmedial practices operate and what political, social and cultural implications they have. The issue aims to investigate the issue of transmediality from the point of view of area studies and to place it at the intersection of a few other academic disciplines: sociology of digital culture, digital literary studies, political economy of new media, screen studies, fandom studies, and so forth. The issue presents a number of case studies, each of which, on the one hand, recognizes the media specificity of a phenomenon in question and, on the other, focuses on cross-media applications and practices. It seeks to expand theories of convergence, remediation, non-linear production and hypertextual creativity by concerning itself with the impact of transmedial practices on authorship, labour, branding and citizenship in multi-platform environments, synergizing with complex cross-promotional product marketing initiatives and the construction of citizen-spectators. The issue interrogates cultural memory as a transmedial locus by considering different media flows and modes of representation.

The journal is a multi-media platform that explores new media as a variety of information flows, varied communication systems, and networked communities. Contributions to Digital Icons cover a broad range of topics related to the impact of digital and electronic technologies on politics, economics, society, culture, and the arts in Russia, Eurasia, and Central Europe. Digital Icons publishes articles from scholars from a variety of academic backgrounds, as well as artists' contributions, interviews, comments, reviews of books, digital films, animation, and computer games, and relevant cultural and academic events, as well as any other forms of discussion of new media in the region.

Це число є тематичним випуском, що містить матеріали Міжнародної наукової конференції «Доля євреїв Буковини і Трансністрії, 1940–1944», яку було проведено 8 жовтня 2007 р. у Чернівецькому національному університеті ім. Ю. Федьковича за підтримки Меморіального музею Голокосту США (Вашингтон, округ Колумбія, США) та Національного центру досліджень Голокосту в Румунії ім. Елі Візеля (Бухарест, Румунія).
Конференція зібрала в Чернівцях провідних спеціалістів з історії Голокосту з метою обговорювання результатів сучасних досліджень з тем історії єврейської громади Буковини у передвоєнні роки та «остаточного розв’язання єврейського питання» в цьому регіоні під час Другої світової війни.
Конференція стала продовженням серії присвячених історії Голокосту в Румунії наукових заходів, організованих у 2005–2006 рр. Меморіальним музеєм Голокосту в Республіці Молдова та у США.

This volume is a thematic issue containing the proceedings of the scholarly conference «The fate of the Jews from Bukovina and Transnistria, 1940–44» which took place on October 8, 2007 at the Yu. Fedkovich Chernivtsy National University with the support of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (Washington, DC, USA) and the Elie Wiesel National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania (Bucharest, Romania).
Well-known experts on the history of Holocaust in Ukraine and Romania gathered in Chernivtsy to discuss the present-day state of research in the fields of the history of the Jewish community of Bukovina and the «Final Solution of the Jewish Question» during World War II. This conference was a part of the series of academic events organized by the USHMM in the Republic of Moldova and the United States in 2005–2006 dedicated to the history of the Holocaust in Romania.

SUMMARY of the articles piblished in this issue::
The November-December, 2010 issue opens with a series of short essays by Krytyka editorial board members. In “Without the Maidan,” Yaroslav Hrytsak, Volodymyr Kulyk, Alexander J. Motyl and Yuri Shapoval recapitulate the year’s political events and focus on the challenges facing Ukrainian society. Further perspective on this is provided in Mykola Riabchuk’s “The End of the Second Republic” and Mykhailo Minakov’s “Submitting to an East-European Fate.”
In “Radical Femen and the New Women’s Activism in Ukraine,”“Capitalism, Poverty and Russification,” a review of Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine: the Rise of Disaster Capitalism (2007), in which he applies Klein’s theses to the realities of post-Soviet Ukrainian society.
In “Polish Testimonies about the Ukrainian Genocide,” Professor Stanislav Kulchytskyi (Institute of Ukrainian History, National Academy of Sciences) discusses the close to 450 annotated documents from Polish and Soviet secret service, military and diplomatic corps archives relating to the famine in Ukraine in a collection edited by Jagellonian University’s Jan Jacek Bruski.
In their article, “Victors and Victims Will Never Agree,” historians Andrii Portnov (Kyiv) and Tetiana Portnova (Dnipropetrovsk) highlight the discourse and ideological collisions between two disparate groups of World War II veterans in Ukraine today–those who fought in the ranks of the Red Army and those who fought with the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army), and examine the status of each of these groups in the country today.
The rubric “Discussions” includes two letters from the Ukrainian diaspora in North America, one from Mykola Haliv (“In the Name of Truth”), the other from Maria Pyskir (“The Falsification of History”) which take up the debate (see Krytyka Nos. 3–4, 2010) surrounding the recent comemmoration of the life and work of Stepan Bandera and the activities and ideological legacy of OUN-UPA (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists – Ukrainian Insurgent Army) in Ukraine. Both correspondents take issue with the theses put forth on these issues by historians Timothy Snyder and John-Paul Himka.
Valentyna Shandra of the Institute of Ukrainian History, National Academy of Sciences, examines in her “Legitimization, Mythmaking and its Monuments,” the ways in which the Russian Empire in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries applied cultural politics and used monuments to Ukrainian historical figures (Prince Volodymyr, Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, the Cossack leaders Iskra and Kochubej, Princess Olha and others) to establish its legitimacy on territories acquired from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
In “Alien Among Their Own”“National Cultures Mirrored by Neighbors,” Professor Tomasz Stryjek of the Polish Academy of Sciences reviews Danuta Sosnowska’s Inna Galicja [Another Galicia] which is devoted to a reconsideration of the nation- building processes in Galicia in the 1830s and 1840s and which shows it not as a region of their peaceful co-existence, but as a highly contested and traumatic period and place. Tetiana Dzyadevych of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy continues this discussion of “the Other,” and of post-colonial approaches to Slavic cultures, in her “Desire to Understand,” a review of Alexander Fiut’s Spotkania z Innym [Meetings with the Other].
In “Language as a Protagonist in Contemporary Ukrainian Literature,” the poet and critic Maria Rewakowicz takes a post-colonial approach to the work of several Ukrainian prose writers, both the “nativists” (Viacheslav Medvid’ and Ievhen Pashkovskii) and the “cosmopolitans” (most prominently, Yuri Andrukhovych) and argues that despite various “ideological” declarations by the former (i.e., their occasional neo-populist, isolationist and anti-democratic positions) both groups share a common post-modernist discourse.
In “PhD Candidate Island and its Circumnavigation” Viacheslav Levytskyi reviews Volodymyr Dibrova’s True Histories and places it within the context of the “Kyiv ironic school.” In his study of “Modernism, Emigration, and All That Jazz,” Mykola Soroka, a historian of Ukrainian culture at the University of Alberta, examines the ideological and aesthetic causes of the generally negative attitude of the Ukrainian diaspora in the interwar and postwar periods towards modern art, and particularly popular music, and especially jazz.
The issue concludes with a memoir and two obituaries. Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute Director Michael S. Flier writes “The Years and Time of a Strict Philologist” in memory of Horace G. Lunt (1918–2010). The obituary is accompanied by Horace Lunt’s “Memo on Shevelov’s Memoires” which is his response to George Y. Shevelov’s 1995 essay on his relations with Roman Jakobson (and Horace Lunt). The circumstances surrounding this essay are discussed by Krytyka editor-in chief George G. Grabowicz in his “The Underside of a Heroic Age.”
In “On the Edge of the Possible,” Mikhail Heifets of Jerusalem, a former Soviet prisoner of conscience, describes his GULAG contacts with the poet and fellow-prisoner Vasyl Stus on the occasion of the bilingual, Ukrainian-Russian edition of Stus’s collection of poetry, Palimpsests, and the death this year of the Kharkiv poet and dissident Marlene Rakhlin (1925–2010). Her memory is also honored by Viktor Marynchak and Inna Zakharova in “The Fortunate Marlene Rakhlin”.

Summary of the articles piblished in this issue:
The September-October issue of Krytyka (2010) opens with two articles dealing with the Constitutional crisis in Ukraine. Oleksandr Severyn’s “Reform, Reflexes and Revolution” and Serhii Balan’s “A Conflict of Legitimacy” both analyze the decision of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine–clearly made under pressure from the government–to invalidate the reform of 2004 and reinstate a Presidential-Parliamentary system. They examine also the legitimacy and consequences of this decision and the challenges that it poses for Ukrainian society and the rule of law.
In the Discussion section Anatolii Rusnachenko in his “Symbols, Critics, Ukraine and Bandera” and Vitalii Nakhmanovych in his “Not only About Bandera” continue the polemic begun in earlier issues of Krytyka by Timothy Snyder, John Paul Himka, Volodymyr Kulyk and others around the decision of President Yushchenko to honor the leader of the Ukrainian nationalists as “Hero of Ukraine.”
In “The Art of Not Seeing” Dariusz Tołczyk writes on the phenomenon of western ignorance of, or greater tolerance for, the crimes of communism and the general asymmetry in the attitudes toward, and memory of, Nazi and Soviet totalitarianism.
In “A Tragic Biography in Rainbow Colors” Liliana Hentosh reviews Timothy Snyder’s The Red Prince: The Secret Lives of A Habsburg Archduke (Basic Books, 2008) which is devoted to remarkable life and transmutation of Wilhelm von Habsburg, who became an ardent Ukrainian patriot and as Vasyl Vyshyvanyj took part in the struggle to establish a Ukrainian state in the post WW I era and ended his life in Kyiv as a prisoner of the NKVD.
Maksym Balaklytskyi in his “Pastors of Words” provides an overview of Protestant missionary writings of the last few years.
In “The Philosophy of Doubt” Yulia Iemets-Dobronosova reviews the Ukrainian translations of John Durham Peters (Speaking into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication) and Scott Lash (Sociology of Postmodernism), as well as of Ukrainian phiolosophers writing on social action and problems of existentialism. In “The Untranslatable Logos” Vitalii Ponomariov reviews the first volume of the Ukrainian translation of Le Vocabulaire européen des philosophies. Dictionnaire des intraduisibles edited by Barbara Cassin.
Tamara Zlobina in her “The Voice of the Generation of 87” sketches a panoramic view of Postmodernist art in Ukraine, drawing particularly on such publications as the 2009 almanach Final Tally (Kinets kintsem), and considers the specific nature of Ukrainian contemporary art, its discourse and infrastructure.
Vasyl Kostiuk in his essay “Hate Discourse Dressed up as Porno-Glamour” examines Oksana Zabuzhko’s novel A Museum of Lost Secrets which mythologizes the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and provides a peculiar brew of nationalist resentment, mass literature and show business.
Alexander Kratochvil of Konstanz, Germany reviews in his “Serhii Zhadan: Departure and Return,” the most recent “nostalgic” novel of the writer, i.e., his Voroshylovgrad, and sees it in the broader and intertextual European context. This is followed by Serhii Zhadan’s “Immigrant Song” which deals with the collective mind-set of the late Soviet period and its mythical phenomenology.
In “The Theory and Practice of the Border Region,” Oleksandr Boychenko responds to Krzysztof Czyżewski’s Linia powrotu. Zapiski z pogranicza (2008), a book of essays that views the borderland as an optimal model of human co-existence. Krzysztof Czyżewski’s provides, so to speak, his own response to this in his
essay “The Bridge and the Man” (Most i człowiek) which seeks a fundamental post-totalitarian understanding of the Other.
“Edge People” an essay by the recently deceased Tony Judt is another striking example of the defense of tolerance and the marginal. Yaroslav Hrytsak’s “My Judt” is an homage to Judt’s work and values–which the author finds so rare in the Ukrainian intellectual context.
"Remembering a Linguist" Oleksii Zaretskii pays his respects to the recently deceased Lesya Stavytska, the prominent socio-linguist and longtime author of Krytyka and Krytyka Publishers.
The issue concludes with a review, “In the Labyrinth of Contemporary Urbanism,” by Oleh Sydor-Hibelynda on an exhibit by the Kyiv artist Olena Pryduvalova, which is illustrated by her works.

From the Balkans to Baghdad (via Baltimore): Labor Migration and the Routes of Empire Keith Brown
(While scholars of the Balkans have frequently emphasized the importance of nationalism in the region, labor migration has long been a critical component of economic, social, and cultural life. In this article, Keith Brown examines the connections between two well-documented cases of the risks faced by long-distance migrants from the territory of the modern Republic of Macedonia, separated by a hundred years. Putting each case into its larger context-U.S. industrial expansion in the early 1900s, and U.S. military occupation in the early 2000s-Brown argues that the study of contemporary Macedonia demands attending to imperial and colonial histories that make clear the larger systems of power in which the country and its people have long been suspended).
On the Politics of Imidž: European Integration and the Trials of Recognition in Post-Conflict Macedonia Andrew Graan
(This article examines how a discourse on international image animated Macedonian politics following the country's 2001 conflict and how it reflected a broader cultural politics of European Union expansion. Contrasting with the continual deferral of recognition that characterized European integration in Macedonia, the Macedonian discourse on image (imidž) anchored a social imaginary where a national project of marketing could facilitate Macedonia's accession into the European Union and concretize its belonging to "Europe."
The analysis developed here centers on the ambivalences in this discourse and the practices it authorized. By incorporating both orientalist distinctions and key concepts from the European Union's own process of integration, the discourse of imidž supported the neoliberal reform associated with Macedonia's postconflict restructuring and European integration. But the discourse on imidž also provided Macedonian political actors with an idiom in which to imagine, respond to, and capitalize on the larger political forces engendered by discursive constructs of Europe and the international community.)
Consuming Ethnicity: Loss, Commodities, and Space in Macedonia Rozita Dimova
(In this article, Rozita Dimova examines the rearticulation of class and ethnicity and how class distinctions produced by a free market and neoliberal economy in Macedonia have affected the interaction of Albanians and Macedonians in postsocialist Macedonia. Dimova highlights the ethnic dimensions of changing patterns of consumption by exploring the class mobility of one ethnic group (Albanians) and thus combines class, commodities, and consumption with notions of ethnicity. The process of articulating ethnicity and class is induced by the larger neoliberal context of the post-Cold War world in which the political economy of the "free" market and privatization inform local subjectivities.
The domain of consumption, therefore, offers a place from which we can understand the complex interactions of multiple actors in Macedonia and see the various economic, performative, and symbolic significance of consumption in which the social mobility of the nouveaux riches Albanians has contributed to the loss of class privileges experienced by many ethnic Macedonians.)
Postsocialism, Social Value, and Identity Politics among Albanians in Macedonia Vasiliki P. Neofotistos
(In this article, Vasiliki P. Neofotistos analyzes the reappropriation of the term Šiptar, a derogatory Macedonian term for Albanians, by male members of the Albanian community in the Republic of Macedonia. Neofotistos shows how the reappropriation of the ethnic slur reflects constellations of social value, that is to say, larger systems of meaning and action concerning who and what is valued in life, that have emerged with Macedonian independence. Albanian men tap into familiar divisions found in the larger Macedonian society and create meaningful forms of collectivity as they deal with rapid social, economic, and political change in the context of Macedonia's postsocialist transformation of social practices and ideals. This case study of Macedonia sheds light on the dynamics of social relations within socially marginalized groups.)
Political Volatility and Governance in East Central Europe Carolyn Forestiere
(In this article, Carolyn Forestiere investigates political volatility as a way to explain varying levels of governance across the new democracies of east central Europe. Specifically, legislative and executive volatility are examined. The results suggest that differences in legislative volatility help explain variations in governance, especially during the beginning of a new democracy. Once party systems begin to consolidate, however, differences in executive volatility begin to matter more. A case study of Poland confirms some of Forestiere's conclusions. While the legislative party system has shown some signs of stabilization, executive volatility remains a salient political problem, which over time has led to a steady decline in the quality of governance.)
Turgenev and a Proliferating French Press: The Feuilleton and Feuilletonistic in A Nest of the Gentry Melissa Frazier
(Elizabeth Cheresh Allen has addressed Ivan Turgenev's strikingly ambiguous and understated narratives, arguing that Turgenev's "language of litotes" consistently serves other than conventionally realistic ends. V. N. Toporov accounts for Turgenev's "strangeness" in more personal terms. Melissa Frazier's close reading of A Nest of the Gentry suggests the importance of yet another factor: Turgenev's engagement with the feuilleton and the increasingly commercialized literary environment that produced it. Ivan Goncharov's accusation that Turgenev had plagiarized elements of A Nest of the Gentry from his own as-yet-unpublished The Precipice finally also makes the point that Turgenev's "strangeness" in this novel derives from an ambiguous language best described as "not that," not the stolen words and half-truths of a feuilletonistic and largely French press, but something nonetheless not unlike.)
Conversing with Stalin, Surviving the Terror: The Diaries of Aleksandra Kollontai and the Internal Life of Politics Beatrice Farnsworth
(In this article, Beatrice Farnsworth suggests that Aleksandra Kollontai, Old Bolshevik, socialist-feminist, and former leader of the Workers' Opposition, survived Iosif Stalin's terror largely because in her effort to assure Stalin that she was no longer an oppositionist, she nurtured a friendly dynamic with him. Indeed, in their conversations, she pursued a gendered strategy of warm deference and flattery. Yet, while publicly serving the Soviet regime, even ingratiating herself with the party leadership, Kollontai, in diaries written for history, privately, and at risk to her life, mourned the regime's failure to develop "communist humanism." With their interlocking themes of emotion and personalities, her diaries not only provide insight into Kollontai's uncanny survival and the personal responses of an Old Bolshevik to political changes and people but offer a rare and intimate portrait of the internal life of Soviet politics at their highest level.)

Номер посвящен теме "Украина-ЕС: Трансграничье Галичины" и включает в себя небольшие эссе, затрагивающие множество ее аспектов: память об историческом конфликтном прошлом региона (и ее пересмотры в настоящее время), имеющего изменчивые административные границы, историография истории Галичины, современные геополитические проблемы, изобретение концепта "Галичины" и его использование в современном политическом мышлении и многое другое.
«Ї» - один из наиболее известных культурологических журналов Украины, издающийся с 1989 года. Выходит как в бумажной, так и в электронной версии (доступ к архиву изданных номеров журнала - по этой ссылке), и является своеобразной дискуссионой площадкой для ученых и публицистов; изданием, разносторонне освещающим проблемы этничности и идентичности, мультикультурализма, регионализма, пограничного сотрудничества, прав человека, гражданского общества, евроинтеграции.
Из редакционного вступления к номеру редактора Тараса Возняка:
Выгодное географическое расположение Галиции, как и Украины в целом, - рядом с Европейским Союзом, между Черным и Балтийским морями, на пути огромных потоков энергоносителей из России и Центральной Азии, - будто давало бы все шансы этой стране и этому краю процветать, оставалось дело за малым: просто "стричь купоны". Однако вместо этого, данная геополитическая составляющая эффективного функционирования и Европейского Союза, и России превратилась в проклятие. И страна в целом, и Галичина, как важная транзитная зона, да еще и зона с уникальными газовыми хранилищами, оказались между молотом и наковальней. С одной стороны распростертые руки братской Российской Федерации. С другой - отстраненнный Европейский Союз.
И здесь можно вспомнить о втором несбывшемся ожидании и галичан, и украинцев вообще - надежде на открытость со стороны ЕС. Открытость и в широком смысле слова, и в узком смысле, когда речь идет об открытости границы. Эта тема уже всеми заболтана и всем осточертела. Живя рядом с границей, галичане четко видели, как несколько приоткрытые в начале 1990-х тогда еще польско-украинская, словацко-украинская или венгерско-украинская границы становились все более "упорядоченным", а следовательно, недоступными для граждан Украины. Расширив поле всех мыслимых свобод внутри себя, Европейский Союз построил высоченную новую Берлинскую стену между собственно свободой и Украины. Особенно очевидным это стало в последние полгода, после того, как политический режим в Украине резко изменился. И можно долго рассуждать, что же было в начале: свертывание поля свободы для украинцев, закрытие любой перспективы для этой страны и народа или же изменение режима. А, может, изменение режима и является следствием такого последовательного отталкивания Украины от европейского содружества наций?
Десятилетие назад журнал «Ї» исследовал состояние польско-украинской границы, сравнивал динамику его развития с динамикой изменений на уже не существующих французско-немецкой и немецко-польской границах. Все было подобным - и история, и искусственность линии границы, и межэтнические конфликты, и желание избавиться от разделений и противостояний, которые они породили. Однако развитие пошло в противоположном направлении. Уродливое детище брюссельской бюрократии разделило некогда единый галицкий регион - а речь идет не только об украинской Галиции, но и о польской Галичине вместе с Краковом. Усилия украинцев и поляков примирить эти два народа, жившие не только порознь, но вместе, были отвергнуты. Брюссель принял то же самое решение, и Иосиф Сталин, проведя этническую чистку и депортации с обеих сторон границы. Решение простое и эффективное. Теперь Брюссель делает вид, что Украины нет, что Берлинская стена на Востоке ничьих прав не ущемляет. Что является ложью и несправедливостью. Причем несправедливостью не только для украинцев. Это бюрократическое порождение так же мешает развиваться и регионам с европейской стороны стены. И не только на галицком отрезке этого нового вала Траяна.
Тем не менее, мы будем продолжать свою работу по "подтачиванию" этой стены. И тем, что возвращаем историческую память, выпуская номера журнала, посвященные идентичностям и Львова, и Тернополя, и Черновцов, Коломыи и Станиславова, и тем, что не спускаем своего глаза с процесса развития бюрократических преград, которые обе официальные стороны с упоением возводят.

This issue of Digital Icons explores how, in post-Communist space, transmedial practices operate and what political, social and cultural implications they have. The issue aims to investigate the issue of transmediality from the point of view of area studies and to place it at the intersection of a few other academic disciplines: sociology of digital culture, digital literary studies, political economy of new media, screen studies, fandom studies, and so forth. The issue presents a number of case studies, each of which, on the one hand, recognizes the media specificity of a phenomenon in question and, on the other, focuses on cross-media applications and practices. It seeks to expand theories of convergence, remediation, non-linear production and hypertextual creativity by concerning itself with the impact of transmedial practices on authorship, labour, branding and citizenship in multi-platform environments, synergizing with complex cross-promotional product marketing initiatives and the construction of citizen-spectators. The issue interrogates cultural memory as a transmedial locus by considering different media flows and modes of representation.

This volume is a thematic issue containing the proceedings of the scholarly conference «The fate of the Jews from Bukovina and Transnistria, 1940–44» which took place on October 8, 2007 at the Yu. Fedkovich Chernivtsy National University with the support of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (Washington, DC, USA) and the Elie Wiesel National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania (Bucharest, Romania).
Well-known experts on the history of Holocaust in Ukraine and Romania gathered in Chernivtsy to discuss the present-day state of research in the fields of the history of the Jewish community of Bukovina and the «Final Solution of the Jewish Question» during World War II. This conference was a part of the series of academic events organized by the USHMM in the Republic of Moldova and the United States in 2005–2006 dedicated to the history of the Holocaust in Romania.

SUMMARY of the articles piblished in this issue::
The November-December, 2010 issue opens with a series of short essays by Krytyka editorial board members. In “Without the Maidan,” Yaroslav Hrytsak, Volodymyr Kulyk, Alexander J. Motyl and Yuri Shapoval recapitulate the year’s political events and focus on the challenges facing Ukrainian society. Further perspective on this is provided in Mykola Riabchuk’s “The End of the Second Republic” and Mykhailo Minakov’s “Submitting to an East-European Fate.”
In “Radical Femen and the New Women’s Activism in Ukraine,”“Capitalism, Poverty and Russification,” a review of Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine: the Rise of Disaster Capitalism (2007), in which he applies Klein’s theses to the realities of post-Soviet Ukrainian society.
In “Polish Testimonies about the Ukrainian Genocide,” Professor Stanislav Kulchytskyi (Institute of Ukrainian History, National Academy of Sciences) discusses the close to 450 annotated documents from Polish and Soviet secret service, military and diplomatic corps archives relating to the famine in Ukraine in a collection edited by Jagellonian University’s Jan Jacek Bruski.
In their article, “Victors and Victims Will Never Agree,” historians Andrii Portnov (Kyiv) and Tetiana Portnova (Dnipropetrovsk) highlight the discourse and ideological collisions between two disparate groups of World War II veterans in Ukraine today–those who fought in the ranks of the Red Army and those who fought with the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army), and examine the status of each of these groups in the country today.
The rubric “Discussions” includes two letters from the Ukrainian diaspora in North America, one from Mykola Haliv (“In the Name of Truth”), the other from Maria Pyskir (“The Falsification of History”) which take up the debate (see Krytyka Nos. 3–4, 2010) surrounding the recent comemmoration of the life and work of Stepan Bandera and the activities and ideological legacy of OUN-UPA (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists – Ukrainian Insurgent Army) in Ukraine. Both correspondents take issue with the theses put forth on these issues by historians Timothy Snyder and John-Paul Himka.
Valentyna Shandra of the Institute of Ukrainian History, National Academy of Sciences, examines in her “Legitimization, Mythmaking and its Monuments,” the ways in which the Russian Empire in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries applied cultural politics and used monuments to Ukrainian historical figures (Prince Volodymyr, Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, the Cossack leaders Iskra and Kochubej, Princess Olha and others) to establish its legitimacy on territories acquired from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
In “Alien Among Their Own”“National Cultures Mirrored by Neighbors,” Professor Tomasz Stryjek of the Polish Academy of Sciences reviews Danuta Sosnowska’s Inna Galicja [Another Galicia] which is devoted to a reconsideration of the nation- building processes in Galicia in the 1830s and 1840s and which shows it not as a region of their peaceful co-existence, but as a highly contested and traumatic period and place. Tetiana Dzyadevych of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy continues this discussion of “the Other,” and of post-colonial approaches to Slavic cultures, in her “Desire to Understand,” a review of Alexander Fiut’s Spotkania z Innym [Meetings with the Other].
In “Language as a Protagonist in Contemporary Ukrainian Literature,” the poet and critic Maria Rewakowicz takes a post-colonial approach to the work of several Ukrainian prose writers, both the “nativists” (Viacheslav Medvid’ and Ievhen Pashkovskii) and the “cosmopolitans” (most prominently, Yuri Andrukhovych) and argues that despite various “ideological” declarations by the former (i.e., their occasional neo-populist, isolationist and anti-democratic positions) both groups share a common post-modernist discourse.
In “PhD Candidate Island and its Circumnavigation” Viacheslav Levytskyi reviews Volodymyr Dibrova’s True Histories and places it within the context of the “Kyiv ironic school.” In his study of “Modernism, Emigration, and All That Jazz,” Mykola Soroka, a historian of Ukrainian culture at the University of Alberta, examines the ideological and aesthetic causes of the generally negative attitude of the Ukrainian diaspora in the interwar and postwar periods towards modern art, and particularly popular music, and especially jazz.
The issue concludes with a memoir and two obituaries. Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute Director Michael S. Flier writes “The Years and Time of a Strict Philologist” in memory of Horace G. Lunt (1918–2010). The obituary is accompanied by Horace Lunt’s “Memo on Shevelov’s Memoires” which is his response to George Y. Shevelov’s 1995 essay on his relations with Roman Jakobson (and Horace Lunt). The circumstances surrounding this essay are discussed by Krytyka editor-in chief George G. Grabowicz in his “The Underside of a Heroic Age.”
In “On the Edge of the Possible,” Mikhail Heifets of Jerusalem, a former Soviet prisoner of conscience, describes his GULAG contacts with the poet and fellow-prisoner Vasyl Stus on the occasion of the bilingual, Ukrainian-Russian edition of Stus’s collection of poetry, Palimpsests, and the death this year of the Kharkiv poet and dissident Marlene Rakhlin (1925–2010). Her memory is also honored by Viktor Marynchak and Inna Zakharova in “The Fortunate Marlene Rakhlin”.

Summary of the articles piblished in this issue:
The September-October issue of Krytyka (2010) opens with two articles dealing with the Constitutional crisis in Ukraine. Oleksandr Severyn’s “Reform, Reflexes and Revolution” and Serhii Balan’s “A Conflict of Legitimacy” both analyze the decision of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine–clearly made under pressure from the government–to invalidate the reform of 2004 and reinstate a Presidential-Parliamentary system. They examine also the legitimacy and consequences of this decision and the challenges that it poses for Ukrainian society and the rule of law.
In the Discussion section Anatolii Rusnachenko in his “Symbols, Critics, Ukraine and Bandera” and Vitalii Nakhmanovych in his “Not only About Bandera” continue the polemic begun in earlier issues of Krytyka by Timothy Snyder, John Paul Himka, Volodymyr Kulyk and others around the decision of President Yushchenko to honor the leader of the Ukrainian nationalists as “Hero of Ukraine.”
In “The Art of Not Seeing” Dariusz Tołczyk writes on the phenomenon of western ignorance of, or greater tolerance for, the crimes of communism and the general asymmetry in the attitudes toward, and memory of, Nazi and Soviet totalitarianism.
In “A Tragic Biography in Rainbow Colors” Liliana Hentosh reviews Timothy Snyder’s The Red Prince: The Secret Lives of A Habsburg Archduke (Basic Books, 2008) which is devoted to remarkable life and transmutation of Wilhelm von Habsburg, who became an ardent Ukrainian patriot and as Vasyl Vyshyvanyj took part in the struggle to establish a Ukrainian state in the post WW I era and ended his life in Kyiv as a prisoner of the NKVD.
Maksym Balaklytskyi in his “Pastors of Words” provides an overview of Protestant missionary writings of the last few years.
In “The Philosophy of Doubt” Yulia Iemets-Dobronosova reviews the Ukrainian translations of John Durham Peters (Speaking into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication) and Scott Lash (Sociology of Postmodernism), as well as of Ukrainian phiolosophers writing on social action and problems of existentialism. In “The Untranslatable Logos” Vitalii Ponomariov reviews the first volume of the Ukrainian translation of Le Vocabulaire européen des philosophies. Dictionnaire des intraduisibles edited by Barbara Cassin.
Tamara Zlobina in her “The Voice of the Generation of 87” sketches a panoramic view of Postmodernist art in Ukraine, drawing particularly on such publications as the 2009 almanach Final Tally (Kinets kintsem), and considers the specific nature of Ukrainian contemporary art, its discourse and infrastructure.
Vasyl Kostiuk in his essay “Hate Discourse Dressed up as Porno-Glamour” examines Oksana Zabuzhko’s novel A Museum of Lost Secrets which mythologizes the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and provides a peculiar brew of nationalist resentment, mass literature and show business.
Alexander Kratochvil of Konstanz, Germany reviews in his “Serhii Zhadan: Departure and Return,” the most recent “nostalgic” novel of the writer, i.e., his Voroshylovgrad, and sees it in the broader and intertextual European context. This is followed by Serhii Zhadan’s “Immigrant Song” which deals with the collective mind-set of the late Soviet period and its mythical phenomenology.
In “The Theory and Practice of the Border Region,” Oleksandr Boychenko responds to Krzysztof Czyżewski’s Linia powrotu. Zapiski z pogranicza (2008), a book of essays that views the borderland as an optimal model of human co-existence. Krzysztof Czyżewski’s provides, so to speak, his own response to this in his
essay “The Bridge and the Man” (Most i człowiek) which seeks a fundamental post-totalitarian understanding of the Other.
“Edge People” an essay by the recently deceased Tony Judt is another striking example of the defense of tolerance and the marginal. Yaroslav Hrytsak’s “My Judt” is an homage to Judt’s work and values–which the author finds so rare in the Ukrainian intellectual context.
"Remembering a Linguist" Oleksii Zaretskii pays his respects to the recently deceased Lesya Stavytska, the prominent socio-linguist and longtime author of Krytyka and Krytyka Publishers.
The issue concludes with a review, “In the Labyrinth of Contemporary Urbanism,” by Oleh Sydor-Hibelynda on an exhibit by the Kyiv artist Olena Pryduvalova, which is illustrated by her works.

From the Balkans to Baghdad (via Baltimore): Labor Migration and the Routes of Empire

(While scholars of the Balkans have frequently emphasized the importance of nationalism in the region, labor migration has long been a critical component of economic, social, and cultural life. In this article, Keith Brown examines the connections between two well-documented cases of the risks faced by long-distance migrants from the territory of the modern Republic of Macedonia, separated by a hundred years. Putting each case into its larger context-U.S. industrial expansion in the early 1900s, and U.S. military occupation in the early 2000s-Brown argues that the study of contemporary Macedonia demands attending to imperial and colonial histories that make clear the larger systems of power in which the country and its people have long been suspended).
On the Politics of Imidž: European Integration and the Trials of Recognition in Post-Conflict Macedonia

(This article examines how a discourse on international image animated Macedonian politics following the country's 2001 conflict and how it reflected a broader cultural politics of European Union expansion. Contrasting with the continual deferral of recognition that characterized European integration in Macedonia, the Macedonian discourse on image (imidž) anchored a social imaginary where a national project of marketing could facilitate Macedonia's accession into the European Union and concretize its belonging to "Europe."
The analysis developed here centers on the ambivalences in this discourse and the practices it authorized. By incorporating both orientalist distinctions and key concepts from the European Union's own process of integration, the discourse of imidž supported the neoliberal reform associated with Macedonia's postconflict restructuring and European integration. But the discourse on imidž also provided Macedonian political actors with an idiom in which to imagine, respond to, and capitalize on the larger political forces engendered by discursive constructs of Europe and the international community.)
Consuming Ethnicity: Loss, Commodities, and Space in Macedonia

(In this article, Rozita Dimova examines the rearticulation of class and ethnicity and how class distinctions produced by a free market and neoliberal economy in Macedonia have affected the interaction of Albanians and Macedonians in postsocialist Macedonia. Dimova highlights the ethnic dimensions of changing patterns of consumption by exploring the class mobility of one ethnic group (Albanians) and thus combines class, commodities, and consumption with notions of ethnicity. The process of articulating ethnicity and class is induced by the larger neoliberal context of the post-Cold War world in which the political economy of the "free" market and privatization inform local subjectivities.
The domain of consumption, therefore, offers a place from which we can understand the complex interactions of multiple actors in Macedonia and see the various economic, performative, and symbolic significance of consumption in which the social mobility of the nouveaux riches Albanians has contributed to the loss of class privileges experienced by many ethnic Macedonians.)
Postsocialism, Social Value, and Identity Politics among Albanians in Macedonia

(In this article, Vasiliki P. Neofotistos analyzes the reappropriation of the term Šiptar, a derogatory Macedonian term for Albanians, by male members of the Albanian community in the Republic of Macedonia. Neofotistos shows how the reappropriation of the ethnic slur reflects constellations of social value, that is to say, larger systems of meaning and action concerning who and what is valued in life, that have emerged with Macedonian independence. Albanian men tap into familiar divisions found in the larger Macedonian society and create meaningful forms of collectivity as they deal with rapid social, economic, and political change in the context of Macedonia's postsocialist transformation of social practices and ideals. This case study of Macedonia sheds light on the dynamics of social relations within socially marginalized groups.)
Political Volatility and Governance in East Central Europe

(In this article, Carolyn Forestiere investigates political volatility as a way to explain varying levels of governance across the new democracies of east central Europe. Specifically, legislative and executive volatility are examined. The results suggest that differences in legislative volatility help explain variations in governance, especially during the beginning of a new democracy. Once party systems begin to consolidate, however, differences in executive volatility begin to matter more. A case study of Poland confirms some of Forestiere's conclusions. While the legislative party system has shown some signs of stabilization, executive volatility remains a salient political problem, which over time has led to a steady decline in the quality of governance.)
Turgenev and a Proliferating French Press: The Feuilleton and Feuilletonistic in A Nest of the Gentry

(Elizabeth Cheresh Allen has addressed Ivan Turgenev's strikingly ambiguous and understated narratives, arguing that Turgenev's "language of litotes" consistently serves other than conventionally realistic ends. V. N. Toporov accounts for Turgenev's "strangeness" in more personal terms. Melissa Frazier's close reading of A Nest of the Gentry suggests the importance of yet another factor: Turgenev's engagement with the feuilleton and the increasingly commercialized literary environment that produced it. Ivan Goncharov's accusation that Turgenev had plagiarized elements of A Nest of the Gentry from his own as-yet-unpublished The Precipice finally also makes the point that Turgenev's "strangeness" in this novel derives from an ambiguous language best described as "not that," not the stolen words and half-truths of a feuilletonistic and largely French press, but something nonetheless not unlike.)
Conversing with Stalin, Surviving the Terror: The Diaries of Aleksandra Kollontai and the Internal Life of Politics

(In this article, Beatrice Farnsworth suggests that Aleksandra Kollontai, Old Bolshevik, socialist-feminist, and former leader of the Workers' Opposition, survived Iosif Stalin's terror largely because in her effort to assure Stalin that she was no longer an oppositionist, she nurtured a friendly dynamic with him. Indeed, in their conversations, she pursued a gendered strategy of warm deference and flattery. Yet, while publicly serving the Soviet regime, even ingratiating herself with the party leadership, Kollontai, in diaries written for history, privately, and at risk to her life, mourned the regime's failure to develop "communist humanism." With their interlocking themes of emotion and personalities, her diaries not only provide insight into Kollontai's uncanny survival and the personal responses of an Old Bolshevik to political changes and people but offer a rare and intimate portrait of the internal life of Soviet politics at their highest level.)
