Border Cities: Creative Topographies
October 21-23, 2009
Lithuanian Literature and Folklore Institute, Vilnius, Lithuania
Border cities,
often marked by contested political and identity formations, are microcosms of cultural translations and diffusions. In this sense, borders cities both divide and bond different cultures, creating a myriad of narrative topographies of variable national landscapes. The goal of the conference is to highlight the interlocked relationships between destructive and creative aspects of various forms of borders within different urban environments. Thus, while Vilnius is the primary focus of our investigation, we welcome all papers on border cities with divided national identities, dispersed local histories and disparate narrative traditions.
