3-year-position: Ethno-religious autonomy & Empire, Leipzig

Applications are invited for one postdoctoral position or two doctoral positions (50 %) within the recently established research group „Pathways of law in ethno-religiously mixed societies. Resources of experience in Poland-Lithuania and its successor states“ at the Institute for Slavic Studies at Leipzig University. The group is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the Emmy Noether-Programme. Starting date is July 1, 2009. Deadline for applications is May 31, 2009.

The research project focuses on the question how ethnically and religiously mixed societies transfer the condition of heterogeneous culture into specific forms of law, legal interaction and political rule. Of special interest are the interrelations of religion and law under the terms of changing political sovereignty.

The position/s is/are vacant in the area of „Traditions of ethno-religious autonomy faced with the Empire. Two case studies in the western provinces of Tsarist Russia and in Habsburg Galicia in
comparison“ (postdoc candidates are expected to elaborate a comparative study, while two Ph.D. candidates could focus on one of the two regions respectively)

Applicants from the Humanities (East European Studies) and Law Faculty (Legal Anthropology, Legal History) are invited to send proposals on projects that fit in the general framework of the group’s project. Good knowlegde of Polish and/or an East Slavic language and of German or English as research language is indispensible as well as the readiness to participate in the group's various scientific activities.

Deadline for applications is May 31, 2008. Payment is according to the German public sector rate 13 TV-L (50 % for PhD candidates). Interviews will be held in June, starting date is July 1, 2009. The appointment is limited to three years. Applications including the usual certificates and information on the individual scientific career (in addition a research outline of max. 5 pages) should be sent in digital or printed form to the address below. One or two letters of recommendation to the same address would be helpful.
