"Это - "книга моей жизни". Она основывается на дневниковых записях, сделанных мною еще в юности в СССР и Польше, а затем уже во взрослые годы, в Польше, Франции и США. Книга прослеживает мою личную эволюцию от убежденного приверженца сталинизма до столь же активного его противника...
Мои записи хранились в зеленом металлическом сундучке. В конце 2009 г. когда мне стукнуло уже 78, я решился вскрыть его. До тех пор я никогда не утруждал себя перечитыванием собственных дневников. Общий объем написанного составил почти три кубических фута. Как только я приступил к чтению, одна мысль стала предельно четкой в моем сознании. Переводить все это не имело смысла, учитывая плохой стиль, множество повторений и излишнюю детализацию. Однако я стал четче представлять проделанный жизненный путь и подумал, что это может представлять интерес для других. Эти записи, конечно, лишь частичка той большой мозаичной картины, на которой представлено влияние идеологий XX века".

Книга Сергея Максудова (Александра Бабенышева), историка, публициста и крупного демографа, посвящена многовековой истории взаимодействия чеченского и русского народов в контексте истории народов Кавказа и России: расчёты потерь жителей Чечни в XIX и XX веках, проблемы права наций на самоопределение и прав человека.
"Вытеснение русского населения из Чечни, в том числе с исконно русских земель, — это проблема, которую необходимо обсуждать, чтобы не допустить развития подобного сценария на других российских территориях, а также чтобы понять, как должно действовать российское государство для относительно благоприятного развития отношений между чеченцами и русскими в будущем."
Количество русских, покинувших Чечню. До начала 1990-х гг. в Чечне проживало более 300 тыс. русскоговорящего населения. Начиная с этого времени из республики выехало около 200 тыс. русскоговорящих жителей.
Потери убитыми со стороны русских. Согласно официальным данным, потери убитыми среди русскоязычного населения за этот период времени составляют около 20 тыс. Однако, по словам С. Максудова, это число кажется довольно преувеличенным. Многие чеченцы, вытесняя русских из Чечни, стремились в первую очередь завладеть их имуществом, поэтому они, как правило, могли ограбить, унизить, но не убить. Убийства русских были скорее результатом того, что люди пытались оказывать сопротивление.
Потери убитыми со стороны чеченцев. По данным С. Максудова, оценка потерь с чеченской стороны в ходе двух чеченских войн также завышена. По мнению автора книги, эти потери составляют около 28 тыс. человек, включая мирное население, милицию и людей, защищавших местную власть.

«Если мы говорим, что бежали и исчезли 300 тысяч человек (русскоязычных жителей Чечни – И.Р.), это сопоставимо с тем, что Сталин депортировал 400 тысяч чеченцев в Северный Казахстан. И внимания к этому результату, трагедии, которая случилась, очень мало. В своей работе я пытался опираться на свидетельства русских, бежавших из Чечни, сейчас живущих в разных местах страны и за границей, чтобы свести имеющуюся информацию и как-то ее посчитать и оценить. Это я считаю важным дополнительным результатом», – сказал Сергей Максудов в московском Независимом пресс-центре, где состоялся разговор о книге.
Исследователь старается быть объективным насколько это возможно при обсуждении столь противоречивой и мифологизированной обеими сторонами темы. Он рассматривает ошибки и преступления как федеральной власти и военных, так и дудаевского режима, и тех, кто распоряжался в Чечне после уничтожения Джохара Дудаева. Хотя книга практически не касается нынешней жизни Чечни и взаимодействия Грозного с Москвой – это не входило в задачи автора, – знание предмета и годы изысканий не оставляют Сергея Максудова равнодушным и к сегодняшним реалиям."

Из аннтотации книги:
В период между началом 1930-х и смертью в 1953 г. Сталин уничтожил более миллиона своих сограждан. Миллионы умерли в трудовых лагерях, в результате депортаций, голода, кровавых убийств, в застенках сталинских реперссивных ведомств. Книга Наймарка - история этих преступлений.
Одна из основных идей, лежащих в основе монографии, позволяет автору расценивать массовые брутальные убийства сталинской эпохи как акты геноцида, непосредственным вдохновителем которых была фигура диктатора.
Норман Наймарк, один из наиболее авторитетных историков совесткой эпохи, пересматривает общепринятое отношение к сталинским преступлениям, отрицающее их геноцидальность в соотвествии с определением термина, данным ООН (преднамеренное убийство группы людей из-за принадлежности к определенной расе, религии, национальности).
Наймарк предлагает читателю объяснение, каким образом Сталин превратился в безжалостного массового убийцу. Исследователь подробно останавливается на эпизодах раскулачивания, Голодомра в Украине, национальных чистках и т.н. "Большом терроре", рассматрвиая их с точки зрения аналогов геноцида в истории. Наймарк проводит параллели между сталинскими преступлениями и политикой Адольфа Гитлера.

Редакторы Ab Imperio взяли в июле этого года пространное интервью у историка Российской империи Джейн Бурбанк и историка французской колониальной империи и колониальной и постколониальной Африки Фредерика Купера – авторов недавно вышедшей фундаментальной работы “Империи в мировой истории: власть и политика разнообразия”. Интервью продолжает серию Ab Imperio “Беседы с авторами”, представляющую читателям журнала значимые публикации в области истории империи и методологии истории и социальных наук. Интервью посвящено “Империям в мировой истории” как попытке новаторского переосмысления опыта всемирной истории через категорию империи. При этом исторический опыт евразийских и Российской империй представлен в книге в общем ряду с более конвенциональными в подобных обобщающих трудах западными колониальными империями, что делает книгу еще интереснее для специалистов по истории России/СССР.
Бурбанк и Купер рассказывают о том, как зародился замысел книги в процессе преподавания в университете Мичигана и Нью-Йоркском университете.
Своим главным достижением они считают попытку осмыслить империю как политическую формацию, основанную на политике разнообразия. Stephen Velychenko. State Building in Revolutionary Ukraine: A Comparative Study of Governments and Bureaucrats, 1917-1922. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2010. 416 pp. ISBN: 978-144-264-132-7.
State Building in Revolutionary Ukraine examines six attempts to create governments on Ukrainian territories between 1917 and 1922. Focusing on how political leaders formed and staffed administrations, this study shows that in Ukraine during this time, there was an available pool of able administrators sufficiently competent in Ukrainian to work as bureaucrats in the independent national governments. These people could sometimes implement policies, a significant accomplishment in light of the upheavals of the time.
Stephen Velychenko compares Ukrainian efforts to create an independent national government with the analogous successful efforts made in Russia, Poland, Ireland and Czechoslovakia. He questions the notion that Ukrainian attempts at national independence failed because its society was 'incomplete' and its leaders unable to organize an effective administration. Pointing out that Bolshevik administrations at the time were no more effective in implementing policies than their rivals, Velychenko argues that more effective governance was not one of the reasons for the Russian Bolshevik victory in Ukraine.
Stephen Velychenko is a research fellow at the Chair of Ukrainian Studies and a CERES associate in the Munk Centre at the University of Toronto, and a visiting lecturer at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy.
Sergei I. Zhuk. Rock and Roll in the Rocket City: The West, Identity, and Ideology in Soviet Dniepropetrovsk, 1960–1985. Baltimore: The John Hopkins University Press, 2010. 464 pp. ISBN: 978-080-189-550-0.
How did rock music and other products of Western culture come to pervade youth culture in Brezhnev-era Dniepropetrovsk, a Ukrainian city essentially closed to outsiders and heavily policed by the KGB? In Rock and Roll in the Rocket City, Sergei I. Zhuk assesses the impact of Westernization on the city's youth, examining the degree to which the consumption of Western music, movies, and literature ultimately challenged the ideological control maintained by state officials. One among many of his stories is how the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar led Dniepropetrovsk's young people to embrace not just one, but two Soviet taboos: rock music and Christianity.
This book is the first historical study - in any language - of the everyday lives of Soviet urban youth during the Brezhnev era. A longtime student and resident of Dniepropetrovsk, Zhuk began research for this project in the 1990s.
Weaving together diaries, interviews, oral histories, and KGB and party archival documents, he provides a vivid account of how Soviet cultural repression and unrest during the Brezhnev period laid the groundwork for a resurgent Ukrainian nationalism in the 1980s. In so doing, he demonstrates the influence of Western cultural consumption on the formation of a post-Soviet national identity.

Nelly Bekus. Struggle over Identity: The Official and the Alternative "Belarusianness". Budapest and New York: Central European University Press, 2010. 312 pp. ISBN: 978-963-9776-68-5
Rejecting the cliché about “weak identity and underdeveloped nationalism,” Bekus argues for the co-existence of two parallel concepts of Belarusianness—the official and the alternative one—which mirrors the current state of the Belarusian people more accurately and allows for a different interpretation of the interconnection between the democratization and nationalization of Belarusian society.
The book describes how the ethno-symbolic nation of the Belarusian nationalists, based on the cultural capital of the Golden Age of the Belarusian past (17th century) competes with the “nation” institutionalized and reified by the numerous civic rituals and social practices under the auspices of the actual Belarusian state.
Comparing the two concepts not only provides understanding of the logic that dominates Belarusian society’s self-description models, but also enables us to evaluate the chances of alternative Belarusianness to win this unequal struggle over identity.

Nelly Bekus is a Belarusian social scientist and publicist, and a member of the European Cultural Parliament. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and is Assistant Professor at the East Slavonic European Studies Department, University of Warsaw.

Since 1991, post-Soviet political elites in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus have been engaged in nation- as well as state-building. They have tried to strengthen territorial sovereignty and national security, re-shape collective identities and re-narrate national histories. Former Soviet republics have become new neighbours, partners and competitors searching for geopolitical identity in the ?new Eastern Europe,? i.e. the countries left outside the enlarged EU. Old paradigms such as ?Eurasia? or ?East Slavic civilisation? have been re-invented and politically instrumentalized in the international relations and domestic politics of these countries. At the same time, these old concepts and myths have been contested and challenged by pro-Western elites.
The main subject of this book is the construction of post-Soviet borders and their political, social and cultural implications. It focuses on the exemplary case of the Ukrainian-Russian border, approaching it as a social construct and a discursive phenomenon. The book shows how the symbolic meanings of and narratives on this border contribute to national identity formation and shape the images of the neighbouring countries as ?the Other? thereby shedding new light on the role of border disputes between Ukraine and Russia in bilateral relations, in EU neighbourhood politics and in domestic political conflicts. The study also addresses ?border making? on the regional level, focusing on the cross-border cooperation between Kharkiv and Belgorod and on the dilemmas of a Euroregion ?in absence of Europe.? Finally, it reflects the everyday experiences of the residents of near-border villages and shows how national and local identities are performed at, and transformed by, the new border.
Tatiana Zhurzhenko is Elise Richter Research Fellow at the Department of Political Science of the University of Vienna, and Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy of the V. Karazin Kharkiv National University, where she studied political economy and social theory. Zhurzhenko is the author of Gendernye rynki Ukrainy (European Humanities University Press 2008). Her articles have appeared in, among other periodicals, Nationalities Papers, Ab Imperio, European Journal of Women?s Studies, Цsterreichische Osthefte, Transit: Europдische Revue, and the internet journal Eurozine.

Imperial expositions held in fin-de-siècle London, Paris and Berlin were knots in a world-wide web. Conceptualizing exhibitions as meta-media, Fleeting Cities undertakes a transdisciplinary investigation into how modernity was created and displayed, consumed and disputed within the European metropolis. Focusing on five such expositions – the Berliner Gewerbeausstellung (1896), the fifth Parisian Exposition Universelle (1900), the Franco-British Exhibition in London (1908), the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley (1924/25), and the Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris (1931) – this award-winning book examines their specific aims and aspirations, evolving forms and execution, and the public debates they engendered. Who shaped these mega-events, how were exposition venues inscribed into the urban fabric, what legacies did they bequeath? Taken as dense textures stretched over time, these expositions undergo both a close hermeneutic reading and broad spatial analysis. Telegraphic Imperialism researches the telegraph system of the British Indian Empire, circa 1830 to 1920, exploring one of the single most significant transnational phenomena of the imperial world, and the link between communication, Empire, and social change. The first electronic communication network, the predecessor of our internet, transformed language, distance, and time. Lahiri Choudhury studies this transnational system and how societies and perceptions changed because of the telegraph, including the issue of Persian sub-imperialism and the rapid expansion of the imperial powers and their rivalries because of the need to protect and control this new information network. The book also analyses in detail British Imperialism and the variety of strategies adopted by Indian nationalists to circumvent imperial control.
During this period the British Indian Empire emerged as a crucial strategic and commercial factor in the telegraph network of the world. Larger India became a communication hub, and relatively remote points such as Fao and Gwadar were transformed from sleepy townlets and fishing villages in Middle Asia into crucial nodes of the Indian Empire. This network serviced trade and communication across nations, territories, and empires from the Americas to the Russias, China, and Australasia including Taiwan and New Zealand. In the present age of rapid and competitive technological advancement, the study of communication history is becoming essential for our better understanding of the nature of the development involved. This book provides a step towards this understanding.

Петр I велел своим указом всем москвитянам отказаться от традиционной одежды в пользу европейских платьев. Тем же, кто вознамерился кроить или продавать традиционое одеяние, грозило "ужасное наказание". Аннтотация статьи: The Nagorno Karabakh region in Western Azerbaijan has been the site of a bloody conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia since 1992. Both nations claim historic ties to the area as independent kingdoms or as autonomous vassal nations under larger empires. This paper will survey toponymic patterns in the 20th century of Nagorno Karabakh, under Soviet and post-Soviet rule. How did toponyms change in the 20th century? Has toponymic reality followed demographic reality? How did the Soviet toponymic system differ from previous imperial or national systems? Lastly, what does Karabakh's toponymic history in the 20th century have to contribute to the discussion on the Soviets' treatment of nationalism, and to the discussion on the ongoing tension over Karabakh? This paper will attempt to answer these questions by examining past and present maps, policy documents, and other textual sources to provide a toponymic history of Nagorno Karabakh. This history will help explain how the current toponymic landscape of Karabakh came to be, and whether or not toponymic actions аnd policies may have contributed to the conflict. By bringing this aspect of Karabakh's history to light, I hope to show how the toponym, an important cultural symbol, plays a role in interethnic relations.

In the official ISA (International Sociological Association) blog at wordpress.com, Artemy Magun (PhD), Director of Smolny Collegium and Professor of the European University of St.Petersburg, points at global crisis of the university education.
Magun writes in line with the recent publications focused on the European University of St.Petersburg and current state of higher and secondary education in the sphere of history. Though his article does not explore the problems of historical education in depth, it raises some important general questions and gives a well-diagnosed analysis of what directions post-Soviet higher education follows nowadays. This book is the first attempt (after the fundamental 4-volume work by V.V. Vel’iaminov-Zernov, published in the second half of the XIX c.) to research the history of the Kasimov Khanate. It is based on primary sources study. The Kasimov Khanate is one of the successor khanates in the Western (Qipchaq) steppe that formed after the break up of the Mongol Empire in general and the Golden Horde specifically. Although the Kasimov Khanate was not large in relative size, it figured very large in the relations of Muscovy (Russia) to the steppe khanates, such as the Kazan’ Khanate and the Crimean Khanate, as well as the Great and the Nogay Hordes. It acted as a bridge and reconciler of conflict between Orthodoxy Christians and Muslims.

Times occur in the history of any country at which life itself forces it to make the decision to undertake a thorough review of its strategy. This usually happens when the old strategy has run its course or has proved to be deeply flawed. Russia today is at such a point. The main reason for this is the ever more obvious crisis in the Russian foreign strategy. The foundations of this strategy were laid immediately after the disintegration of the USSR, when the Yeltsin's Russia started rapidly to shed the "burden" of the post-soviet republics. In many ways that's why the period in Russian history which began with the disintegration of the Soviet Union will no doubt one day be described as a "Time of Troubles", like the one at the beginning of the 17th century, when the whole system of state power in Russia collapsed and Moscow's position in the world became much weaker. Today Putin's and Medvedev's Russia is once again having troubles finding its place in a rapidly-changing world. The analysis of the steps being taken by Russia in the Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) in the areas of policy, security and economic is one of the best illustration of these.

The Captive and the Gift: Cultural Histories of Sovereignty in Russia and the Caucasus
by Bruce Grant
The Caucasus region of Eurasia, wedged in between the Black and Caspian Seas, encompasses the modern territories of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as well as the troubled republic of Chechnya in southern Russia. A site of invasion, conquest, and resistance since the onset of historical record, it has earned a reputation for fearsome violence and isolated mountain redoubts closed to outsiders. Over extended efforts to control the Caucasus area, Russians have long mythologized stories of their countrymen taken captive by bands of mountain brigands.
In The Captive and the Gift, the anthropologist Bruce Grant explores the long relationship between Russia and the Caucasus and the means by which sovereignty has been exercised in this contested area. Taking his lead from Aleksandr Pushkin's 1822 poem "Prisoner of the Caucasus," Grant explores the extraordinary resonances of the themes of violence, captivity, and empire in the Caucasus through mythology, poetry, short stories, ballet, opera, and film.
Grant argues that while the recurring Russian captivity narrative reflected a wide range of political positions, it most often and compellingly suggested a vision of Caucasus peoples as thankless, lawless subjects of empire who were unwilling to acknowledge and accept the gifts of civilization and protection extended by Russian leaders.
Drawing on years of field and archival research, Grant moves beyond myth and mass culture to suggest how real-life Caucasus practices of exchange, by contrast, aimed to control and diminish rather than unleash and increase violence.
The result is a historical anthropology of sovereign forms that underscores how enduring popular narratives and close readings of ritual practices can shed light on the management of pluralism in long-fraught world areas.
Bruce Grant is Associate Professor of Anthropology at New York University. He is the author of "In the Soviet House of Culture: A Century of Perestroikas".

Editor's Introduction
In keeping with our policy to publish recurring issues on places in the world undergoing or recently having undergone marked changes (see our issues on China [Volume 73:1, Spring 2006] and South Africa [Volume 72:3, Fall 2005]), this issue looks at current aspects of the Russian state and society during a period of many deep, systemic changes.
Our readers should be aware that we began putting this issue together well before the Russian election that took place on March 2, 2008, in the hope of publishing an assessment by knowledgeable specialists of the consequences of that election. Due to various unforeseen editorial decisions and vicissitudes, the issue is appearing one year after that election and during an economic crisis that is much worse than when these articles were written. Even so, some of our authors do discuss some the problems created by falling oil prices, which began many months ago and severely impacted the Russian economy that prospered only as long as those prices remained high.
It is, as our readers surely know, impossible for a quarterly to be up to date when it tackles current events. There is simply too much delay time between inviting authors to write and the actual publication of their papers. Nevertheless, we will continue to examine these kinds of issues in the belief that reflective pieces on quickly changing global matters can increase our understanding of what is going on and what is likely to happen.
I think that is true of the current issue. While the economic crisis dominates the headlines, the issue itself traces the trajectories of a host of other concerns, social and political, in the years since the transition from the Yeltsin era to the Putin and then Medvedev era. It highlights especially the stamp Putin has put on contemporary Russia, and it is these discussions that can help us better understand the new Russia that will be affected by this crisis.

The Burden of Remembering is a book that focuses on two major turning points in the 20th century history that determine the formation of that century as a realm of memory – the Second World War and the collapse of Communist regimes and ideology in Europe. The collapse of the USSR seemed to spell the end of the empire, yet it by no means marked the end of Russia's enduring imperial preoccupations, extending over four and a half centuries since the reign of Ivan IV. Is there such a thing as an imperial trace in Russia's contemporary culture? Condee argues that we cannot make sense of contemporary Russian culture without accounting for its imperial legacy and mapping out the terms of such an analysis. She turns to the instance of contemporary cinema to focus this line of inquiry. Within film (and implicitly other cultural fields as well) do we limit our accounting to narrative evidence--Chechen wars at the periphery, historical costume dramas of court life--or could an imperial trace be sought in other, more embedded ways, in the manner and structure or representation, the conditions of productions, the recurrent preoccupations of its leading filmmakers, the ways in which collective belonging is figured or disfigured? This book organizes these questions around the work of Russia's internationally ranked auteurs of the late Soviet and post-Soviet period: Kira Muratova, Vadim Abdrashitov, Nikita Mikhalkov, Aleksei German, and Aleksandr Sokurov.

This book is the first attempt to examine Japan’s relations with Russia from the perspective of national identity; providing a new interpretation of Japan’s perceptions of Russia and foreign policy.
Alexander Bukh focuses on the construction of the Japanese self using Russia as the other, examining the history of bilateral relations and comparisons between the Russian and Japanese national character. The first part of the book examines the formation of modern Japan’s perceptions of Russia, focusing mainly on the Cold War years. The second part of the book examines how this identity construction has been reflected in Japan’s economic, security and territorial dispute related policy towards post-Soviet Russia.

Abstract
"The aim of this paper is to analyze significant trends which collectively have enough potential to transform the image of world order shaped through the globalization debates of 90s, by using Hardt and Negri’s work (Hardt and Negri, 2000) as a base point. The main trends under review in this article are: the change in the perceptions of time through reconstruction of the past, the reterritorialization of political space, the reemergence of the classical practices of imperialism with its inside/outside duality,the erosion in the powers and effectiveness of international organizations, the restructuring of
the international political economy, economic nationalism, a global wave of armament and spread of nuclear capabilities, and the new politics of identity that intends to foster national/civilizational subjectivities. Throughout the article, I compare those trends with Hardt and Negri’s ontological map. My conclusion is that the direction of change in the world order is toward a different way from the one depicted in the Hardt and Negri’s Empire. I call the principal actors of the newly emerging ontological picture of the world order “nation-empires”. The term nation-empire implies the reregionalization of power either around a great nation state like U.S., China and Russia, or multistate regionalization efforts as they are seen in Europe,Latin America and South East Asia. This new regionalism is not only limited to socio-economic realm, but also includes the rising sovereignty claims of the regional power centers over the functions of multilateral institutions and other cultural, ideological, political and military spheres."

"Вытеснение русского населения из Чечни, в том числе с исконно русских земель, — это проблема, которую необходимо обсуждать, чтобы не допустить развития подобного сценария на других российских территориях, а также чтобы понять, как должно действовать российское государство для относительно благоприятного развития отношений между чеченцами и русскими в будущем."
Количество русских, покинувших Чечню. До начала 1990-х гг. в Чечне проживало более 300 тыс. русскоговорящего населения. Начиная с этого времени из республики выехало около 200 тыс. русскоговорящих жителей.
Потери убитыми со стороны русских. Согласно официальным данным, потери убитыми среди русскоязычного населения за этот период времени составляют около 20 тыс. Однако, по словам С. Максудова, это число кажется довольно преувеличенным. Многие чеченцы, вытесняя русских из Чечни, стремились в первую очередь завладеть их имуществом, поэтому они, как правило, могли ограбить, унизить, но не убить. Убийства русских были скорее результатом того, что люди пытались оказывать сопротивление.

Особое место уделено судьбе русскоязычного населения в годы вооруженного противостояния. Этот аспект, по мнению Максудова, исследовался и обсуждался недостаточно.
«Если мы говорим, что бежали и исчезли 300 тысяч человек (русскоязычных жителей Чечни – И.Р.), это сопоставимо с тем, что Сталин депортировал 400 тысяч чеченцев в Северный Казахстан. И внимания к этому результату, трагедии, которая случилась, очень мало. В своей работе я пытался опираться на свидетельства русских, бежавших из Чечни, сейчас живущих в разных местах страны и за границей, чтобы свести имеющуюся информацию и как-то ее посчитать и оценить. Это я считаю важным дополнительным результатом», – сказал Сергей Максудов в московском Независимом пресс-центре, где состоялся разговор о книге.
Исследователь старается быть объективным насколько это возможно при обсуждении столь противоречивой и мифологизированной обеими сторонами темы. Он рассматривает ошибки и преступления как федеральной власти и военных, так и дудаевского режима, и тех, кто распоряжался в Чечне после уничтожения Джохара Дудаева. Хотя книга практически не касается нынешней жизни Чечни и взаимодействия Грозного с Москвой – это не входило в задачи автора, – знание предмета и годы изысканий не оставляют Сергея Максудова равнодушным и к сегодняшним реалиям."

В период между началом 1930-х и смертью в 1953 г. Сталин уничтожил более миллиона своих сограждан. Миллионы умерли в трудовых лагерях, в результате депортаций, голода, кровавых убийств, в застенках сталинских реперссивных ведомств. Книга Наймарка - история этих преступлений.
Одна из основных идей, лежащих в основе монографии, позволяет автору расценивать массовые брутальные убийства сталинской эпохи как акты геноцида, непосредственным вдохновителем которых была фигура диктатора.
Норман Наймарк, один из наиболее авторитетных историков совесткой эпохи, пересматривает общепринятое отношение к сталинским преступлениям, отрицающее их геноцидальность в соотвествии с определением термина, данным ООН (преднамеренное убийство группы людей из-за принадлежности к определенной расе, религии, национальности).
Наймарк предлагает читателю объяснение, каким образом Сталин превратился в безжалостного массового убийцу. Исследователь подробно останавливается на эпизодах раскулачивания, Голодомра в Украине, национальных чистках и т.н. "Большом терроре", рассматрвиая их с точки зрения аналогов геноцида в истории. Ukrainian History: The 20th-Century Bureaucrats and Westernizers
Stephen Velychenko. State Building in Revolutionary Ukraine: A Comparative Study of Governments and Bureaucrats, 1917-1922. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2010. 416 pp. ISBN: 978-144-264-132-7.
State Building in Revolutionary Ukraine examines six attempts to create governments on Ukrainian territories between 1917 and 1922. Focusing on how political leaders formed and staffed administrations, this study shows that in Ukraine during this time, there was an available pool of able administrators sufficiently competent in Ukrainian to work as bureaucrats in the independent national governments. These people could sometimes implement policies, a significant accomplishment in light of the upheavals of the time.
Stephen Velychenko compares Ukrainian efforts to create an independent national government with the analogous successful efforts made in Russia, Poland, Ireland and Czechoslovakia. He questions the notion that Ukrainian attempts at national independence failed because its society was 'incomplete' and its leaders unable to organize an effective administration. Pointing out that Bolshevik administrations at the time were no more effective in implementing policies than their rivals, Velychenko argues that more effective governance was not one of the reasons for the Russian Bolshevik victory in Ukraine.
Stephen Velychenko is a research fellow at the Chair of Ukrainian Studies and a CERES associate in the Munk Centre at the University of Toronto, and a visiting lecturer at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy.
Sergei I. Zhuk. Rock and Roll in the Rocket City: The West, Identity, and Ideology in Soviet Dniepropetrovsk, 1960–1985. Baltimore: The John Hopkins University Press, 2010. 464 pp. ISBN: 978-080-189-550-0.
How did rock music and other products of Western culture come to pervade youth culture in Brezhnev-era Dniepropetrovsk, a Ukrainian city essentially closed to outsiders and heavily policed by the KGB? In Rock and Roll in the Rocket City, Sergei I. Zhuk assesses the impact of Westernization on the city's youth, examining the degree to which the consumption of Western music, movies, and literature ultimately challenged the ideological control maintained by state officials. One among many of his stories is how the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar led Dniepropetrovsk's young people to embrace not just one, but two Soviet taboos: rock music and Christianity.
This book is the first historical study - in any language - of the everyday lives of Soviet urban youth during the Brezhnev era. A longtime student and resident of Dniepropetrovsk, Zhuk began research for this project in the 1990s.
Weaving together diaries, interviews, oral histories, and KGB and party archival documents, he provides a vivid account of how Soviet cultural repression and unrest during the Brezhnev period laid the groundwork for a resurgent Ukrainian nationalism in the 1980s. In so doing, he demonstrates the influence of Western cultural consumption on the formation of a post-Soviet national identity.

Rejecting the cliché about “weak identity and underdeveloped nationalism,” Bekus argues for the co-existence of two parallel concepts of Belarusianness—the official and the alternative one—which mirrors the current state of the Belarusian people more accurately and allows for a different interpretation of the interconnection between the democratization and nationalization of Belarusian society.
The book describes how the ethno-symbolic nation of the Belarusian nationalists, based on the cultural capital of the Golden Age of the Belarusian past (17th century) competes with the “nation” institutionalized and reified by the numerous civic rituals and social practices under the auspices of the actual Belarusian state.
Comparing the two concepts not only provides understanding of the logic that dominates Belarusian society’s self-description models, but also enables us to evaluate the chances of alternative Belarusianness to win this unequal struggle over identity.

Nelly Bekus is a Belarusian social scientist and publicist, and a member of the European Cultural Parliament. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and is Assistant Professor at the East Slavonic European Studies Department, University of Warsaw.

Since 1991, post-Soviet political elites in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus have been engaged in nation- as well as state-building. They have tried to strengthen territorial sovereignty and national security, re-shape collective identities and re-narrate national histories. Former Soviet republics have become new neighbours, partners and competitors searching for geopolitical identity in the ?new Eastern Europe,? i.e. the countries left outside the enlarged EU. Old paradigms such as ?Eurasia? or ?East Slavic civilisation? have been re-invented and politically instrumentalized in the international relations and domestic politics of these countries. At the same time, these old concepts and myths have been contested and challenged by pro-Western elites.
The main subject of this book is the construction of post-Soviet borders and their political, social and cultural implications. It focuses on the exemplary case of the Ukrainian-Russian border, approaching it as a social construct and a discursive phenomenon. The book shows how the symbolic meanings of and narratives on this border contribute to national identity formation and shape the images of the neighbouring countries as ?the Other? thereby shedding new light on the role of border disputes between Ukraine and Russia in bilateral relations, in EU neighbourhood politics and in domestic political conflicts. The study also addresses ?border making? on the regional level, focusing on the cross-border cooperation between Kharkiv and Belgorod and on the dilemmas of a Euroregion ?in absence of Europe.? Finally, it reflects the everyday experiences of the residents of near-border villages and shows how national and local identities are performed at, and transformed by, the new border.
Tatiana Zhurzhenko is Elise Richter Research Fellow at the Department of Political Science of the University of Vienna, and Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy of the V. Karazin Kharkiv National University, where she studied political economy and social theory. Zhurzhenko is the author of Gendernye rynki Ukrainy (European Humanities University Press 2008). Focusing on five such expositions – the Berliner Gewerbeausstellung (1896), the fifth Parisian Exposition Universelle (1900), the Franco-British Exhibition in London (1908), the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley (1924/25), and the Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris (1931) – this award-winning book examines their specific aims and aspirations, evolving forms and execution, and the public debates they engendered. Who shaped these mega-events, how were exposition venues inscribed into the urban fabric, what legacies did they bequeath? Telegraphic Imperialism researches the telegraph system of the British Indian Empire, circa 1830 to 1920, exploring one of the single most significant transnational phenomena of the imperial world, and the link between communication, Empire, and social change. The first electronic communication network, the predecessor of our internet, transformed language, distance, and time. Lahiri Choudhury studies this transnational system and how societies and perceptions changed because of the telegraph, including the issue of Persian sub-imperialism and the rapid expansion of the imperial powers and their rivalries because of the need to protect and control this new information network. The book also analyses in detail British Imperialism and the variety of strategies adopted by Indian nationalists to circumvent imperial control.
During this period the British Indian Empire emerged as a crucial strategic and commercial factor in the telegraph network of the world. Larger India became a communication hub, and relatively remote points such as Fao and Gwadar were transformed from sleepy townlets and fishing villages in Middle Asia into crucial nodes of the Indian Empire. This network serviced trade and communication across nations, territories, and empires from the Americas to the Russias, China, and Australasia including Taiwan and New Zealand. In the present age of rapid and competitive technological advancement, the study of communication history is becoming essential for our better understanding of the nature of the development involved. This book provides a step towards this understanding.

Аннтотация статьи: The Nagorno Karabakh region in Western Azerbaijan has been the site of a bloody conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia since 1992. Both nations claim historic ties to the area as independent kingdoms or as autonomous vassal nations under larger empires. This paper will survey toponymic patterns in the 20th century of Nagorno Karabakh, under Soviet and post-Soviet rule. How did toponyms change in the 20th century? Has toponymic reality followed demographic reality? How did the Soviet toponymic system differ from previous imperial or national systems? Lastly, what does Karabakh's toponymic history in the 20th century have to contribute to the discussion on the Soviets' treatment of nationalism, and to the discussion on the ongoing tension over Karabakh? This paper will attempt to answer these questions by examining past and present maps, policy documents, and other textual sources to provide a toponymic history of Nagorno Karabakh. This history will help explain how the current toponymic landscape of Karabakh came to be, and whether or not toponymic actions аnd policies may have contributed to the conflict. By bringing this aspect of Karabakh's history to light, I hope to show how the toponym, an important cultural symbol, plays a role in interethnic relations.

In the official ISA (International Sociological Association) blog at wordpress.com, Artemy Magun (PhD), Director of Smolny Collegium and Professor of the European University of St.Petersburg, points at global crisis of the university education.
Magun writes in line with the recent publications focused on the European University of St.Petersburg and current state of higher and secondary education in the sphere of history. Though his article does not explore the problems of historical education in depth, it raises some important general questions and gives a well-diagnosed analysis of what directions post-Soviet higher education follows nowadays. This material is definitely of interest to the net.abimperio.net visitors.

Empires in World History departs from conventional European and nation-centered perspectives to take a remarkable look at how empires relied on diversity to shape the global order. Beginning with ancient Rome and China and continuing across Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa, Jane Burbank and Frederick Cooper examine empires' conquests, rivalries, and strategies of domination--with an emphasis on how empires accommodated, created, and manipulated differences among populations.
Burbank and Cooper examine Rome and China from the third century BCE, empires that sustained state power for centuries. They delve into the militant monotheism of Byzantium, the Islamic Caliphates, and the short-lived Carolingians, as well as the pragmatically tolerant rule of the Mongols and Ottomans, who combined religious protection with the politics of loyalty. Burbank and Cooper discuss the influence of empire on capitalism and popular sovereignty, the limitations and instability of Europe's colonial projects, Russia's repertoire of exploitation and differentiation, as well as the "empire of liberty"--devised by American revolutionaries and later extended across a continent and beyond.

This book is the first attempt (after the fundamental 4-volume work by V.V. Vel’iaminov-Zernov, published in the second half of the XIX c.) to research the history of the Kasimov Khanate. It is based on primary sources study. The Kasimov Khanate is one of the successor khanates in the Western (Qipchaq) steppe that formed after the break up of the Mongol Empire in general and the Golden Horde specifically. Although the Kasimov Khanate was not large in relative size, it figured very large in the relations of Muscovy (Russia) to the steppe khanates, such as the Kazan’ Khanate and the Crimean Khanate, as well as the Great and the Nogay Hordes. It acted as a bridge and reconciler of conflict between Orthodoxy Christians and Muslims.

Монография посвящена Касимовскому ханству («царству») – тюрко-татарскому государству, существовавшему на территории Московской Руси в XV – XVII вв. Жизни этого государственного образования сопутствовало немало дискуссионных вопросов - например, как могло находиться мусульманское государство с мусульманским правителем во главе почти в центре православной России? Было ли это "царство" ханством или княжеством? Спорным представляется и само условие образования Касимовского ханства - насколько добровольной мерой был этот шаг московского правительства; вызвано ли было его образование внутренними потребностями Московского государства или же было продиктовано извне? В книге рассматриваются статус данного этнополитического образования, вопросы образования и устройства Касимовского ханства, политическая история ханства указанного периода, источники и литература по проблеме. Книга является первым опытом комплексного изучения одного из важнейших позднезолотоордынских юртов.
Книга предназначена исследователям тюркского мира и историкам России XV-XVI вв., преподавателям и студентам ВУЗов, музейным работникам, всем, интересующимся историей.

Times occur in the history of any country at which life itself forces it to make the decision to undertake a thorough review of its strategy. This usually happens when the old strategy has run its course or has proved to be deeply flawed. Russia today is at such a point. The main reason for this is the ever more obvious crisis in the Russian foreign strategy. The foundations of this strategy were laid immediately after the disintegration of the USSR, when the Yeltsin's Russia started rapidly to shed the "burden" of the post-soviet republics. In many ways that's why the period in Russian history which began with the disintegration of the Soviet Union will no doubt one day be described as a "Time of Troubles", like the one at the beginning of the 17th century, when the whole system of state power in Russia collapsed and Moscow's position in the world became much weaker. Today Putin's and Medvedev's Russia is once again having troubles finding its place in a rapidly-changing world. The analysis of the steps being taken by Russia in the Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) in the areas of policy, security and economic is one of the best illustration of these.

The Captive and the Gift: Cultural Histories of Sovereignty in Russia and the Caucasus

The Caucasus region of Eurasia, wedged in between the Black and Caspian Seas, encompasses the modern territories of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as well as the troubled republic of Chechnya in southern Russia. A site of invasion, conquest, and resistance since the onset of historical record, it has earned a reputation for fearsome violence and isolated mountain redoubts closed to outsiders. Over extended efforts to control the Caucasus area, Russians have long mythologized stories of their countrymen taken captive by bands of mountain brigands.
In The Captive and the Gift, the anthropologist Bruce Grant explores the long relationship between Russia and the Caucasus and the means by which sovereignty has been exercised in this contested area. Taking his lead from Aleksandr Pushkin's 1822 poem "Prisoner of the Caucasus," Grant explores the extraordinary resonances of the themes of violence, captivity, and empire in the Caucasus through mythology, poetry, short stories, ballet, opera, and film.
Grant argues that while the recurring Russian captivity narrative reflected a wide range of political positions, it most often and compellingly suggested a vision of Caucasus peoples as thankless, lawless subjects of empire who were unwilling to acknowledge and accept the gifts of civilization and protection extended by Russian leaders.
Drawing on years of field and archival research, Grant moves beyond myth and mass culture to suggest how real-life Caucasus practices of exchange, by contrast, aimed to control and diminish rather than unleash and increase violence.
The result is a historical anthropology of sovereign forms that underscores how enduring popular narratives and close readings of ritual practices can shed light on the management of pluralism in long-fraught world areas.

Editor's Introduction
In keeping with our policy to publish recurring issues on places in the world undergoing or recently having undergone marked changes (see our issues on China [Volume 73:1, Spring 2006] and South Africa [Volume 72:3, Fall 2005]), this issue looks at current aspects of the Russian state and society during a period of many deep, systemic changes.
Our readers should be aware that we began putting this issue together well before the Russian election that took place on March 2, 2008, in the hope of publishing an assessment by knowledgeable specialists of the consequences of that election. Due to various unforeseen editorial decisions and vicissitudes, the issue is appearing one year after that election and during an economic crisis that is much worse than when these articles were written. Even so, some of our authors do discuss some the problems created by falling oil prices, which began many months ago and severely impacted the Russian economy that prospered only as long as those prices remained high.
It is, as our readers surely know, impossible for a quarterly to be up to date when it tackles current events. There is simply too much delay time between inviting authors to write and the actual publication of their papers. Nevertheless, we will continue to examine these kinds of issues in the belief that reflective pieces on quickly changing global matters can increase our understanding of what is going on and what is likely to happen.
I think that is true of the current issue. While the economic crisis dominates the headlines, the issue itself traces the trajectories of a host of other concerns, social and political, in the years since the transition from the Yeltsin era to the Putin and then Medvedev era. It highlights especially the stamp Putin has put on contemporary Russia, and it is these discussions that can help us better understand the new Russia that will be affected by this crisis.

The Burden of Remembering is a book that focuses on two major turning points in the 20th century history that determine the formation of that century as a realm of memory – the Second World War and the collapse of Communist regimes and ideology in Europe. These two events are revisited from the point of view of memory studies to demonstrate the interplay of
continuance and discontinuance of political and cultural regimes of memory of these ruptures as well as their interconnections in present day discourses and practices of remembering and forgetting. The memory practices and models of the Second World War are comparatively interrelated with the practices of remembering and interpreting the realities of the period after the fall of Communism in Europe.

The Imperial Trace: Recent Russian Cinema

The collapse of the USSR seemed to spell the end of the empire, yet it by no means marked the end of Russia's enduring imperial preoccupations, extending over four and a half centuries since the reign of Ivan IV. Is there such a thing as an imperial trace in Russia's contemporary culture? Condee argues that we cannot make sense of contemporary Russian culture without accounting for its imperial legacy and mapping out the terms of such an analysis. She turns to the instance of contemporary cinema to focus this line of inquiry. Within film (and implicitly other cultural fields as well) do we limit our accounting to narrative evidence--Chechen wars at the periphery, historical costume dramas of court life--or could an imperial trace be sought in other, more embedded ways, in the manner and structure or representation, the conditions of productions, the recurrent preoccupations of its leading filmmakers, the ways in which collective belonging is figured or disfigured? This book organizes these questions around the work of Russia's internationally ranked auteurs of the late Soviet and post-Soviet period: Kira Muratova, Vadim Abdrashitov, Nikita Mikhalkov, Aleksei German, and Aleksandr Sokurov.

This book is the first attempt to examine Japan’s relations with Russia from the perspective of national identity; providing a new interpretation of Japan’s perceptions of Russia and foreign policy.
Alexander Bukh focuses on the construction of the Japanese self using Russia as the other, examining the history of bilateral relations and comparisons between the Russian and Japanese national character. The first part of the book examines the formation of modern Japan’s perceptions of Russia, focusing mainly on the Cold War years. The second part of the book examines how this identity construction has been reflected in Japan’s economic, security and territorial dispute related policy towards post-Soviet Russia.
Providing not only a case study of the Japan-Russia relationship, but also engaging in a critical examination of existing International Relations frameworks for conceptualizing the relationship between national identity and foreign policy, the appeal of the book will not be limited to those interested in Japanese/Russian politics but will also be of interest to the broader body of students of International Relations.

Abstract
"The aim of this paper is to analyze significant trends which collectively have enough potential to transform the image of world order shaped through the globalization debates of 90s, by using Hardt and Negri’s work (Hardt and Negri, 2000) as a base point. The main trends under review in this article are: the change in the perceptions of time through reconstruction of the past, the reterritorialization of political space, the reemergence of the classical practices of imperialism with its inside/outside duality,the erosion in the powers and effectiveness of international organizations, the restructuring of
the international political economy, economic nationalism, a global wave of armament and spread of nuclear capabilities, and the new politics of identity that intends to foster national/civilizational subjectivities. Throughout the article, I compare those trends with Hardt and Negri’s ontological map. My conclusion is that the direction of change in the world order is toward a different way from the one depicted in the Hardt and Negri’s Empire. I call the principal actors of the newly emerging ontological picture of the world order “nation-empires”. The term nation-empire implies the reregionalization of power either around a great nation state like U.S., China and Russia, or multistate regionalization efforts as they are seen in Europe,Latin America and South East Asia. This new regionalism is not only limited to socio-economic realm, but also includes the rising sovereignty claims of the regional power centers over the functions of multilateral institutions and other cultural, ideological, political and military spheres."
