PhD Fellowship at the Department of Border Region Studies, Syddansk Universitet
"The deconstruction of borders and unfamiliarity in the European Union: An analysis of historical representations of otherness and contemporary practices in border regions".
The Department of Border Region Studies, at Campus Sønderborg, invites applications for a PhD Fellowship to be filled by November 1, 2010 and for a period of three years.
The Department of Border Region Studies (IFG) is rooted in the unique history of the Southern Danish border region. At the same time, the department has a close relationship with the business community and the cultural institutions of the region. The comparative aspect including other (border) regions in Europe is particularly strong within the regional studies and within the border region studies. Due to a strong focus on comparative aspects the department has developed a broad international research network within Europe. In addition, the department has a special obligation to carrying out research relating to the German minority in Southern Jutland.
The fellowship is part of the research project: The deconstruction of borders and unfamiliarity in the European Union: An analysis of historical representations of otherness and contemporary practices in border regions.
Five European universities cooperate in this project which is funded by the European Science Foundation.
Under the umbrella of the overall programme, the aim of the fellowship is to analyse the interplay of labour market mobility and processes of familiarity and unfamiliarity as explanatory factors of levels in regional cohesion. A Long Durée case study is to be conducted on labour mobility in the Danish-German border region for the period spanning from the first half of the 19th century to the present day. As Danish-German border region we define roughly the territory of the former Duchy of Schleswig. The Duchy of Schleswig is challenging from a research perspective as its status has changed several times during the stipulated period. The composition of national majorities and minorities interchanges as well. Thereby the case illustrates the changing role of region, identity and state in processes of re- and de-bordering. The Long Durée perspective is used to illustrate the political, social and cultural expressions of cohesion at a small geographical scale and the importance of different, competing concepts of regions and regionalisms over time.
Candidates should hold a university degree in history or related disciplines as ethnology, anthropology or cultural studies. The master thesis should be graded at least with B according to the ECTS scale. Advanced knowledge of English is required in addition to mastering Danish and German at least at reading level. Experience with archival studies will be considered an advantage. The application must include a project proposal description of max 8 pages. The project description must include a clear research problem, which falls within the theme of the project and focuses on the Danish-German border region. It should also include a discussion of relevant theory and scholarly literature on border regions, as well as methods and data planned to be used.
PhD students are expected to active participation in department activities.

Факультет политологии Университета Южной Дании (Оденс) обяъявлет о конкурсе на поулчение 5 докторантских стипендий по программе “Beliefs in Politics: Actors and Determinants (Elites, Frames, and Personalities)”.
Стипендии рассчитаны на терхгодичный срок.
Сроки подачи заявок: 1 сентября 2010 г.
Больше подробностей:
At the Department of Political Science and Public Management, five PhD scholarships within the programme “Beliefs in Politics: Actors and Determinants (Elites, Frames, and Personalities)” are available for appointment for a period of three years as of October 1, 2010 or as soon as possible hereafter. The PhD scholarship must be completed over a three-year period, and at least two of the three years, the workplace will be in Odense, Denmark. Upon approval by the advisor and the programme director up to one year can be spent at a foreign university. The allocation of a PhD scholarship presupposes enrolment in the PhD programme in Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.
We look for candidates with a Master Degree in political science, political psychology or political communication (or a related field) who have distinguished themselves at the MA level and, preferably, have written a Master thesis about social, institutional, psychological and contextual determinants of political beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour. We prefer applicants whose strengths lie within methods, quantitative and/or qualitative. Only candidates with top academic qualifications will be considered for enrolment.
The PhD scholarships are funded by the Danish government as “mobility scholarships” which means that candidates from the University of Southern Denmark are not eligible to apply.
The application must include a detailed description of the PhD project. In addition to a general problem formulation, it should discuss relevant theory, propositions/hypotheses, research design and methods, and include a work schedule. The project description cannot exceed 7 pages. In addition to the full project description, a summary of no more than 250 words must be included.
The project must relate to the general theme of the programme. We are interested in the formation of political beliefs at both the elite and the mass level, and we particularly welcome projects that explicitly integrate insights from political science, (political) psychology, communication theory, and genetics/biology. In spite of the cross-disciplinary ambitions of the programme, the project must be relevant to political science. When we select PhD students for the programme, we are eager to cover the following broad sub-themes:
• The institutional, organizational, political and psychological determinants of elite communication and framing strategies (elites include politicians, experts, journalists, etc.).
• The influence of elite information, communication and framing strategies on the attitudes and behaviour of other elite groups.
• The effect of (a) elite communication and framing strategies and (b) quality of information on mass opinion, attitudes, and behaviour.
• The influence of individual level variables, in particular personality traits and genetic factors on mass opinion, attitudes, and behaviour. The research programme has just finished a survey among Danish twins on political attitudes and behaviour, and a representative survey on personality traits and political attitudes and behaviour. PhD students will have access to these data sources.
As a part of the scholarship, an individual programme must be followed, covering PhD courses, seminars, and active participation in conferences and workshops. The PhD student is expected to obtain teaching experiences and competences in other forms of communication and presentation. As a part of the PhD study programme, the PhD student is expected to make an extended visit to a research institution abroad for a semester or more. We also encourage PhD students to attend international conferences and summer schools. All activities are fully funded by the research programme. It is likewise expected that the student participates in the Department’s various activities and spends regular hours at the Department.
For further information about the PhD programme please contact PhD coordinator, Associate Professor Niels Ejersbo, tel. +45 6550 3193, e-mail: niels@sam.sdu.dk, or programme director Professor Asbjørn Sonne Nørgaard, tel. +45 6550 4305, e-mail: ano@sam.sdu.dk. Furthermore, you should submit a certified copy of your Master’s degree certificate including examination results, CV, project description, information on teaching experience or other forms of knowledge communication and if relevant, a list of publications. All non-Danish documents must be translated into English and certified.
Applications will be assessed by a committee. When the evaluation committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. Potential candidates may be asked to come to Odense for an interview (expenses paid).

The International Higher Education Support Program (HESP) is committed to the advancement of higher education in the humanities and social sciences throughout the region of South-East Europe and Eurasia. As part of HESP's effort to promote the internationalization of scholarship and development of indigenous capacities for independent and critical academic work in the region, the Central Asia and Caucasus Research and Training Initiative (CARTI) provides support and training for original research by young university-based academics in their home academic environment. The program targets the scholars in the early stages of their postgraduate training and recent graduates of doctoral programs in the post-Soviet countries of South Caucasus and Central Asia, Afghanistan and Mongolia.
CARTI seeks to assist the motivated young academics who are in crucial early stages of their careers to gain critical competence with the foundational and current scholarship and active involvement in international intellectual exchange and debate in their subject areas. With the support of CARTI, the Fellows engage state-of-the-art resources, theories, methodologies and approaches to their research and teaching in the subjects and areas of importance to the academic and social development in the region. CARTI is committed to enrichment and innovation in higher education in the humanities and social sciences and emphasizes the significance of original and critical scholarly work in the development of university teaching and curricula.
CARTI Junior Fellowships support the individuals in early stages of their formal Doctoral studies (such as aspirantura) and focus on development of ideas and skills for high-quality research work. Junior Fellowships serve as medium for testing and challenging the theories, methods and assumptions in the core of the individual research projects, while at the same time guiding and assisting the Fellows in
the first independent large-scale research efforts. Senior Fellowships are offered to young scholars who have recently received their Doctoral (e.g. Candidate of Science) degrees. The Fellowships support the advancement or revision of their research agenda and development of international research and teaching partnerships with special emphasis on presentation of scholarly work and translating/incorporating the outcomes and experience of research into teaching.
Through its mentoring scheme, CARTI helps to establish and supports active direct collaboration of Fellows with advanced International Scholars engaged in the studies and teaching in the similar subjects. The program offers training opportunities to help Fellows develop competence with foundational theories and methodologies in the
disciplines and thematic areas of their academic work and venues for peer feedback, discussion and collaboration on the regional and international levels.
The typical term of CARTI Fellowship support is 24 months. The support package covers the purchase of and access to research and teaching materials and resources, equipment, funding for research activities, exchange visits between the Fellow and the International Scholar (including full funding for a Fellow's academic visit to the home university of the International Scholar for the duration of an
academic semester), development of teaching materials and a stipend.

I propose a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Strasbourg,
as of September or October 2009, and for 12 months. The fellow will
work on unity and diversity of the Cistercian charters in the 12th
century.
Can I kindly ask you to spread this information to any interested person?
Applicants must have a foreign (i. e. not-French) Ph. D., and be less
than 35 years at
Dec. 31st, 2009. They need to have a good knowledge of mediaeval latin and palaeography, and should have worked or in diplomatics, or in religious history, or
in comparative regional history.
The idea is to study the use of the charters in some Cistercian abbeys during the 12th century: three northern French abbeys (e. g. Cercamp, Vaucelles and Signy); three others should be chosen in another
European region. For each abbey, the fellow will study the issuers of the charters, their text, their geographical and chronological spreading and the nature of the juridical action.
The idea is to see if in different regions Cistercian abbeys ask charters to the same issuers (popes, bishops, princes, lords, cathedral chapters), using the same kind of charters (pancartae, notitiae), for the same juridical actions (gifts, exchanges). The
first step will be the study of the preservation of the charters in the different abbeys (originals, copies, editions)
This project is a part of a larger work on
- the geography of the use of writing in the Middle Ages
- unity and diversity in the Medieval Europe
Applications are expected at latest for June 15th, 2009.
For any further information, do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely yours,
Benoit Tock

PhD Fellowship, Syddansk Universitet

PhD Scholarships, Political Science, Denmark
Information about the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark is available at: www.sdu.dk/sam/phduk

All Applicants for CARTI Fellowships must be citizens and residents of the following countries: Afghanistan*, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan* and Uzbekistan.
The requirement of formal registration with a Doctoral Program may be waived for applicants from Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. For further information on the applicant eligibility for Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, interested individuals are encouraged to inquire directly with the program office at the contact information below.
Interested individuals are invited to complete the on-line Application Form and submit all supporting documents in electronic versions via the OSI On-Line Application System: https://oas.soros.org/oas.

The Siberian Studies Centre conducts social anthropological research in several regions of the Russian Federation (the North, Siberia and the Far East of Russia). For the period 2008-2012, the Siberian Studies Centre’s key activity is the Research Programme “Conditions and Limitations of Lifestyle Plurality”. The overall goal of the programme is to describe: the preconditions and processes that lead to the differentiation of lifestyles; the scope and dimensions of social recognition, indifference or intolerance towards different models of behaviour; and the factors that facilitate the mainstreaming of such models and/or limit the diversity of lifestyle choices. In 2008-2009, members of the Siberian Studies Centre have been working on the conceptual and theoretical frames of lifestyle and formulated possibilities for focussing and operationalising research on this theme.
The task of the new team of researchers will be to develop, on the basis of previous and ongoing research at MPI, the methods and research instruments for a comparative study on spatial and/or visual aspects of lifestyles in contemporary Russia , to carry out fieldwork on the basis of this methodology, and to evaluate results in a comparative manner.

Post-doctoral fellowship
Dear colleagues,
I propose a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Strasbourg,
as of September or October 2009, and for 12 months.
Sincerely yours,
Benoit Tock
Professor of Medieval History
